April 2024: methane

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: ACT

  • READ | What's the deal with methane?
  • WATCH | A TED talk about the methane moment we're in
  • 🎯 ACT | What you can do about methane (TODAY)
  • REFLECT | Share your commitment to truthful language in the climate movement (4/24/24)

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes for the action plan

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Hello and greetings! I am on my last brain cell today getting this Changeletter out to you, so please excuse (or welcome) the brevity.

It’s going to be straight to the point action tips on methane today, and if you missed our READ or WATCH modules, you’re probably going to want that quick bit of context (the video in WATCH is a great summary of why you should care about this thing but TLDR our methane emissions are heeelllllaaa bad). Catch up here!

Alright let’s get into it, and if you live in Seattle, next week is your LAST CHANCE to get into this.

(This is us from yesterday; on the right, Tessa's writing a postcard with an amazing hair accessory, and on the left, I've got 15 letters to Seattle government in my hand ready to mail)

🌍 A fun announcement to win big: Join us for Soapbox Project’s first Climate Competition to win a $500 and a National Parks Pass sponsored by our partner, Future! Track your carbon impact and earn rewards for your climate-friendly behaviors between now and the end of April. Sign up now and inspire others to join the climate competition. Your bite-sized action plan Reader

✅ Commit to 1 methane action and report it here!

Here are 3 quick things you can do about methane:

  1. Commit to calling it methane gas, not “natural gas”. As you remember from our READ module, natural gas is primarily methane. And methane is a way more intense trapper of heat than CO2. So we release more methane gas = we are heellllaaa more screwed.
  2. Stop fracking around! The Sierra Club (which you should absolutely join) is fighting hard to stop the expansion of new fracked gas efforts. This will SIGNIFICANTLY increase natural gas emissions, and remember, natural gas = methane gas. Sign this petition to tell them to fracking stop this. I mean, stop this fracking.

If you live outside the U.S., you can sign it anyway and use a U.S. zip code like 20024. This is a global issue!
  3. Nerd out on MethaneSAT data. This lil guy speaks for itself—take a tour!

Or you could just figure out how to make a cow fart less, and if you decide that's your innovation, please report back urgently!

The first step, assuming current cow fart baseline, to reducing methane as an everyday human is getting methane-literate. Then, join your local environmental justice/policy group (like the Sierra Club or 350.org)—they’re already on the case and they can help you get plugged in.

Share what you're doing in this 1-min form!

Alrighty! I have officially exhausted my last brain cell, and I’ll see you next week! 🌻

Love,

Nivi
