September 2024: rest & burnout

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: WATCH

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes for the action plan

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

It's a new season and the planets are aligning. (At least that's what I heard from an astrology friend and I'll choose to believe it.)

Writing about rest & burnout was honestly SO GREAT for my own well-being. I took more walks this month. I signed up for a new workout class. I breathed more slowly and deeply. Thank you for following along and choosing your own rest!

We'll wrap up with our REFLECT module today, but first, some announcements that are relevant if you live in/have friends in NYC or Seattle!

  • NEXT THURSDAY in NYC ✨Soapbox is hosting our October plant-based supper club, a four-course meal where each course is paired with a climate action! Sign up here for a beautiful, delicious, and connective evening.
  • October Tuesdays in Seattle starting 10/8 we're kicking off our next weekly community dinner & climate action series. Learn more & register.

Also, an exciting share from one of our community partners: join Lis's heart-centered feminine leadership program for change agents (it's called a magicmind omg) here!

Reply to this email to share what cities you'd like to see Soapbox programming in for 2025 and remember, our members get first priority in deciding, designing, and leading our joyful community spaces for climate action.

✅ REFLECT on your commitment to collective care and rest

If you missed the last 3 modules on this topic, catch up here.

Last week, you were encouraged to make yourself/a friend a card on the 7 types of rest, get a climate coloring book, join a community, or throw your phone away. Did ya do it?

To close out this month's Changeletter on rest, you can choose from three reflections (or do all of them). Below is also a video of underwater wonders + relaxing music so you can play it in the background.

  • Reflection #1: how has learning about the 7 types of rest changed your relationship with burnout?
  • Reflection #2: do you believe rest is something to be earned? why or why not?
  • Reflection #3: ponder "Messenger" by Mary Oliver

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.

My commitment is to internalize that my work is "loving the world" and "mostly standing still and learning to be astonished." If I do nothing else, it will be enough. Thank you Mary!

And if you ever need the encouragement, you deserve rest now and always. I will be happy to tell you this whenever you need to hear it.

Love,

Nivi
