August 2024: trees

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.โ€‹

This week's module: WATCH

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes for the action plan

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

If you're reading this Reader I am out in the TREES! ๐ŸŒณ

I've scheduled out this Changeletter (whooaa time travel) because I am hopefully unplugged and hugged.

(Hugged by a tree? My mom? My friends? I'll keep you posted next week when I'm back)

Today's WATCH module is actually about how TREES TALK TO EACH OTHER (!!!) and this is very important information for me. If you see me mumbling to myself, no, I'm talking to my new friends! And if you missed last week's READ module with tree facts, it's hereโ€‹

But first before blowing your mind about trees, remember last week I told you we had two events?

  • We wrote OVER 1,500 POSTCARDS to voters last week at our Action Hour! It was WIIIILLLDD
  • Our in-person event in Seattle (climate community building & coworking) was awesome as an opossum. So we are doing it again next weekโ€‹
  • We're also doing a couple events in NYC in the fall, thanks to our member Roopa and her BEAAAUUUTIFUL plant-based supper club so stay tuned if you live there

Before we get to our WATCH module, shoutout to Brooke and more folks who joined Soapbox Project as a member this week! And here's a pic of our voting and our IRL community building parties... we had over 350 people register for Soapbox events last week hooolly cow.

โœ… WATCH this unbelievable videos about how trees can talk to each other

The more I learn about trees, the more my mind is BLOWN! Scientist Suzanne Simard gave this incredible TED talk in 2016 about how trees talk to each other. She shares a whole underground world with us--one that most of us couldn't even imagine exist.

More recently, she co-created a bite-sized educational video on The Secret Language of Trees, which is our selected WATCH module content. It's only four minutes long, so check it out and share it with your own underground (or aboveground) network.

Some veerryy basic highlights from the video (but seriously just watch it):

  1. Trees talk to each other through mycorrhizal networks. Social media's got NOTHING on these networks, honestly
  2. Trees collaborate with each other to share resources! They can freaking pass nutrients through their mycorrhizal networks. One tree can help another tree get fed. It's so wholesome. This could be us, y'all
  3. Trees can anticipate threats and sound the alarm during emergencies! They know about the climate emergency, that's for sure

Alright that's it for me today because I am out in the trees. I hope you get some tree time this week too,

Nivi
