April 2024: methane

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: REFLECT

  • READ | What's the deal with methane?
  • WATCH | A TED talk about the methane moment we're in
  • ACT | What you can do about methane
  • 🎯 REFLECT | Share your commitment to truthful language in the climate movement (TODAY)

Estimated reading time: 1 minute for the action plan

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Soapbox Seattle (our first-ever city-based pop-up, wow lots of hyphens) has finally wrapped. IT WAS SO GLORIOUS. I feel like I have no words for it, but here are a few to start.

Next up: we're doing a one-off event in NYC in May, and then hopefully a proper pop-up series there in the fall! Wahoo!!

Here are some pics; today's REFLECT module will be a pretty short one centered around how we can use thoughtful language in the climate movement, especially around "natural" methane gas.

Alright, onto our FINAL week on our April topic methane! Any guesses on what's next?

🌍 LAST DAY: Join us for Soapbox Project’s first Climate Competition to win a $500 and a National Parks Pass sponsored by our partner, Future! Track your carbon impact and earn rewards for your climate-friendly behaviors between now and the end of April. Sign up now and inspire others to join the climate competition.

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

✅ REFLECT on how you're going to approach methane conversations! Submit your reflections here.

Your reflection is yours and yours only, but I recommend setting your timer for 3 minutes and writing down a response to at least one of these prompts.

  • In our READ module, what did you learn about methane this month? What hella pissed you off about the way "natural gas" has been positioned?
  • One thing we explored in our WATCH module is that methane's huge problem also poses a HUGE OPPORTUNITY. Where are you in your methane knowledge journey (e.g. want to deepen your understanding / advocacy / innovation? feeling more like meh, that's not for me, I got other problems?) How does the opportunity make you feel?
  • How will you commit to more truthful language around methane, especially when so many people don't know about the harms it poses? One suggestion: come up with a few "if/then" statements that will help you. "If I ever have a conversation where natural gas comes up, then I will ask if the other person knows what it's made of." or "If I ever talk about natural gas, then I will refer to it as methane gas."

Language makes a huge difference, which is why we suggested the "methane gas" wording in our ACT module.

If you feel inspired to share any of this, shoot me an email back. I love reading your reflections!

Love,

Nivi 💚
